Oddly enough, people with fibromyalgia tend not to have the "half moons" at the base of their fingernails, with the exception of the thumbs. Another indicator with fingernails is if they have brittle, vertical ridges.
Now I know where my moons went. As a child they always fascinated me and of and on through this journey I had wondered. Thank you
I agree, I was able to reverse most of my FIBROMYALGIA symptoms[a problem for 20+ yrs], by eating a gluten free diet..My 'moons ', have returned to all fingernails. I suggest it is worth a try for others...
I've heard the nail ridges are a sign of endocrine imbalance. If a current theory is true that FMS is related to low activity of the hypothalamus, which regulates all the endocrine glands, then this would be expected. There is a bit more information about this theory re the hypothalamus in Dr. Teitelbaum's first book.
I have been reading that lack of half moons in nails and vertical ridges can be a sign of vitamin deficiencies, particularly B12. I'm wondering if fibromyalgia is really caused by non-absorbtion of vitamins.

I have never notice this until now. What would be the cause behind that? Would it be less oxygen in the blood?
I have the verticle ridges on all my nails and very prominent half moons on my thumbnails, but there are much smaller, less noticed half moons on most of my other nails, as well.
i have often wondered why i only have half moons osplit i have fibromn my thumbs they also have ridges and tend to split
I DON'T HAVE MOONS! You are so right! Just read this, looked at nails and no moons except for thumbs as you described! They are very pink, so maybe that is good, huh? Thanks...I can't wait to mention this to my RA doctor, lol...
I always wondered where my half moons went I have them on my thumbs but not fingers too Interesting!
Finally, an answer to this question. I asked my RA doctor and he SAID I should see a dermatologist. I have been wondering for years why my nails became brittle and have vertical lines. I can't believe my RA doctor didn't have an answer!!
