Is FMS real or am I just depressed?

Depression is normal

Accept that depression is normal. Not only is there a physical cause but it's a natural reaction to our reduced lifestyle. You've been depressed before and will be again - but it always passes. Hang onto that thought.

Feeling "down" for a day for no obvious reason can be normal and being upset or sad for weeks or months can also be a normal and appropriate reaction to an event ie. loss of a loved one, being sacked from a job, splitting up with a partner - and should "pass". However, true major depression is not normal and does not "always pass" if left untreated. Symptoms can include feeling not only depressed and sad but also feeling nothing at all (no pleasure or interest in activities). It is when symptoms occur for at least two weeks and can also involve sleep disturbance (insomnia, hypersomnia), preoccupation with death, suicidal thoughts, lack of energy, significant weight gain or loss and demonstrates a big change from previous functioning ie. person is usually cheerful, hardworking and engaging but lately has not been to work, cries constantly and does not talk. So yes, being mildly depressed is a "natural reaction" to life's many downs but major depressive disorder is not, is very debilitating but can be effectively treated with appropriate help.

It's about time someone told the truth...depression is normal. It's part of life. It's pathetic to see all the doctors, practitioners, specialists and drug companies trying to make money off of it...just like they do everything else. If they can't create a problem...they can't treat it (and get paid to do so). Kudos!!! :)
